"Zirzir," according to my Amharic dictionary, can mean many things, including small change, order, list, detail, feature, or enumeration. This project is all of those. It's a catalog of sorts – a list of experiences, memories and impressions. But it's also a collection, a bringing together of bits and pieces, a counting up of small change.
I lived in Ethiopia for more than three years and my camera found much that was visually compelling there. I wasn't interested in documenting people and culture per se, but more so what I perceived as the essences of daily life as expressed in visual form. Some recurring themes and topics included: street dogs and animal parts, souks (small roadside shops), bajaj (tuk-tuks), signs of development, and the alluring aesthetic of clutter (horror vacui).
