“What is it?” That was the most common question in my undergraduate critiques. To say that I saw form where others looked for content would be too simplistic and not quite accurate. Still, there is a lot to be reckoned with in this regard. Many wondered what my pictures "were" ... maybe because they assumed I was trying to depict something rather than create something. I wasn't interested in meaning as much as shape, contrast, line, pattern, tone, and so on. I was more interested in the pure visual impact of things than their context, meaning, or function in the human-oriented scheme of things. Over the course of decades my ideas and interests expanded and developed until I discovered that I was viewing almost everything I photographed as works of art, whether intentional or not. I saw paintings, sculpture, installations, assemblages, performance art, and sets for one act plays everywhere I went. I still do.
