I lived in Mandalay, the second largest city in the country. It was an urban place but with the easygoing feel of a smaller town. While it did have its supermarkets, hotels, and streets full of buzzing motorbikes and cars, it had few tall buildings and sprawled outwards rather than upwards. The city was easy to navigate by motorbike and was mostly laid out on a simple grid. Mandalarians were, in my experience, mostly laid-back and friendly, so living there was a relatively low-stress experience, and I found myself quite satisfied and fortunate to be based there rather than Yangon.
I also had the chance to travel a bit to smaller cities and more rural spots. It was relaxing to experience the quiet life in the villages and countryside outside Mandalay, Bagan, and Monywa, and these outings were essential in getting a deeper experience and better perspective.
